Skills IT Pros Need

Encryption

When sensitive information is moving from one platform or state to another, IT pros need to understand exactly how to encrypt that data in the best possible way. The CompTIA Cybersecurity Career Pathway, including CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+) cover data encryption.
Incident Response

IT pros need to do more than just create a plan for when things go wrong. They need to guide the organization in practicing incident response plans so that they become muscle memory.

Project Management

IT pros need to know what it means to participate in a project and contribute to each stage. CompTIA Project+ covers the fundamental project management skills IT pros need.

Writing

IT pros need to communicate well both verbally and in writing, from emails to reports.

Presentation

Another aspect of communicating well is presenting information in a clear, concise, useful manner, both in presentation decks and by speaking to groups.

About CompTIA Security+

Globally recognized, CompTIA is one of the world’s largest IT trade associations. A leader in vendor-neutral certifications, CompTIA has awarded more than two million certifications since its inception in 1993. Currently, it offers 13 vendor-neutral credentials across four focus areas: core skills, infrastructure, cybersecurity and other professional skills (project management or training, for example).

One of CompTIA’s most popular certifications to get, the CompTIA Security+ credential is part of CompTIA’s Core certification portfolio, which includes the IT Fundamentals+, A+, and Network+ credentials. Security+ builds on the technical and networking skills gained through the A+ and Network+ certifications. Both A+ and Network+ are recommended prerequisites for the Security+ certification, along with two years of security-focused IT administration experience.

The latest version of the certification exam is sy0-501. Like many other certifications, Security+ is valid for a limited period of time and requires continuing education for each renewal.

CompTIA Security+ vs CISSP

Here, we’ll take a closer look at several popular cybersecurity certifications, including what skills they validate and what’s needed to maintain the credential. At the end, you’ll find a table summarizing our findings to help you easily select the certification that most closely aligns to where you are now and where you want to be in the future. Note that all of the certifications discussed here require a single exam.

The sy0-501 exam also has six objectives, but three of them are quite different from sy0-401 objectives:
Threats, attacks and vulnerabilities — 21 percent
Technologies and tools — 22 percent
Architecture and design — 15 percent
Identity and access management —16 percent
Risk management — 14 percent
Cryptography and PKI — 12 percent

While the Security+ and SSCP are both excellent credentials, they are geared to different audiences. Security+ targets entry-level security practitioners who often work in roles such as information security analyst. The SSCP, on the other hand, is geared to IT professionals with more advanced skills in security operations and administration.

Earning official comptia a+ certifications

Almost all highly valued courses offer certification levels. Certifications are often costly, but they offer several benefits. First, certification means that you have proven your knowledge and ability in a certain area, which makes you a more desirable candidate for vacancies. For instance, acquiring a certificate from Cisco, a recognized vendor of various hardware, network and application solutions that are used almost in every company, will give you a definite competitive advantage.

Also, it’s a common practice for companies to conduct webinars for their certified specialists when they plan to roll out major improvements, which enables you to get acquainted with the updates before the official release.

Here are several of the most popular cybersecurity certifications:
Cisco CyberOps Professional
Ethical Hacker Certification
Cloud Security Certification

Will the Network+ certification get me a job?

Imagine someone named Joe who recently left the U.S. military with a security clearance. Joe has very little IT experience but decides to pursue the A+ certification and earns it.
A contractor (called Acme of Wiley E. Coyote and Road Runner fame) has a contract with the U.S. DoD. One position recently opened up. It requires someone with an A+ certification and a security clearance. Normally, Acme gets $50 an hour for every hour a person is working in this position and they pay $30 an hour to someone working in it. Acme is losing $20 an hour (or about $800 a week) for every hour this position remains unfilled.

If Joe applies and can prove he has an A+ certification, the clearance, and a pulse, he has the job.

When pursuing a new job, you often have two short-term goals.
Get an interview. The first goal is to get an interview. You have the best chance of success here if your resume has the certifications and the knowledge/skillset required for the job. A cover letter (or email introduction) also helps.
Shine during the interview to get an offer. You need to demonstrate that have the knowledge/skillset required by the job and you are a good fit on the organization’s team. This is often much more than your technical ability.

Risk Management comptia a+

Risk is the likelihood that a threat will exploit a vulnerability. A vulnerability is a weakness, and a threat is a potential danger. The result is a negative impact on the organization. Impact refers to the magnitude of harm that can be caused if a threat exercises a vulnerability.

For example, a system without up-to-date antivirus software is vulnerable to malware. Malware written by malicious attackers is the threat. The likelihood that the malware will reach a vulnerable system represents the risk. Depending on what the malware does, the impact may be an unbootable computer, loss of data, or a remote-controlled computer that has joined a botnet. However, the likelihood of a risk occurring isn’t 100 percent. An isolated system without Internet access, network connectivity, or USB ports has a very low likelihood of malware infection.

The likelihood significantly increases for an Internet-connected system, and it increases even more if a user visits risky web sites and downloads and installs unverified files.

CompTIA has announced that the Security+ SY0-501

CompTIA has announced that the Security+ SY0-501 exam will become available on October 4th, 2017. Early availability is primarily being provided for partners, courseware developers, and instructors so that they can prepare or certify by taking the new exam. The SY0-501 Exam will be marketed and generally available to the public starting October 25th, 2017. Japanese and Portuguese exams will be released shortly after this date.
When will the old (SYO-401) Security+ exam be retired?
CompTIA indicates that the SY0-401 exam will be available until July 31st, 2018 in English. Portuguese and Japanese exams will retire 6 to 9 months after the English version.

Which version of the exam should you or must you take?

During the exam date overlap, you may purchase a voucher and take either exam. You should check with your employer regarding their preference. Regardless of the exam version that you complete, both are part of the CompTIA Continuing Education program, so you will need to retake the then current version of the exam each three years, or complete the alternative recertification elements. The driving factor is possibly your familiarity with exam content on the SY0-401 version versus the SY0-501 version.

Benefits of Getting an IT Certification Online

As someone with four kids and a full-time job, finding the time to schedule and travel to a testing center was HARD! Between dentist appointments, birthday parties and work obligations, I often had to wait to take my exam, even though I had studied and was ready. It's frustrating to be ready for an exam but unable to take it because of time constraints.

Online testing solves this problem. I can take an IT certification exam from ANYWHERE, as long as it's quiet and distraction free (and meets a few other Pearson OnVUE requirements). This means I can take it at work, at school and, my favorite, at home.
2. Familiar, Comfortable Environment

In my opinion, I have the best home office in the world. (You probably do, too!) I have my best study sessions in this office. Why? I designed it to be that way. It's the ultimate space for me to learn, study, lab and now … take an IT certification exam.

Taking an exam in the same environment where I did all my studying made it just a little bit easier. Again, testing centers are great, but they aren't home. They aren't familiar.

How do you optimize the partner experience within a partner ecosystem?

Anytime we bring on an ecosystem vendor, we start off by sharing who each of our top partners are and understand where the synergies are. And most of the time our partners align, which allows us to leverage each other's intel to evaluate the business objectives and perspective of our partners. Today, it's not enough to go to partners and say you fit. You have to have a plan showing how you fit.

How do you optimize the partner experience within a partner ecosystem?

Partner experience is a force multiplier. This is a big deal. If you focus on your partners’ experience, you will forge the relationships that help scale and expand your reach into new markets. This happens through training, enablement, and listening. All campaigns or marketing collateral must be put together through the partner perspective and be material that partners can actually bring to their customers.

When partners go to market, what’s the ideal way to handle sales compensation?

Sales compensation is up to the partner. As you work with ecosystem vendors, it’s important to track internal involvement on deals being made between partners and vendors. Track the data to show the sales team how integrated and intertwined you are and how you fit into multiple categories. Then bring it to the marketing team and build a campaign.

Through this process, let the ecosystem be the force multiplier. If you can build a variety of impactful campaigns you can help your partner stand out among the competition.

cybersecurity budget is inadequate

Even as strategies and budgets are put in place to address cybersecurity, it’s evident we still have a long way to go in protecting sensitive, proprietary data. In a 2019 National Survey of Local Government Cyber Security Programs, 67% of respondents state that their cybersecurity budget is inadequate. How can governments protect without the right strategy and budget to support? Alan comments that doing the “best we can” is not good enough anymore. “Working smart” is what matters.

Cloud options provide benefits that outweigh the perceived risk of taking data out of the direct control of the agency. Today, IT leaders are doing more to protect their computing environments. Security aside, there are financial aspects to gain as well. Consider these advantages:
Lower initial investment. When you take advantage of cloud services you don’t need to purchase system hardware, software and software licenses or support a data center.
Costs based on usages. With cloud services you pay only for what you use with a predictable per-employee monthly subscription fee.
Decrease total cost of ownership. With cloud you no longer need to worry about replacing computer hardware, operating systems and database systems.

How comptia new question types are graded

Two important pieces of information about the new drag-and-drop and performance-based questions that you need to know:
Partial credit – Scoring credit may be offered if a candidate answers only part of a question correctly.
No negative credit – CompTIA does not employ negative scoring on exam questions, so you won’t lose points for incorrect answers. A candidate should answer every exam question, even on the ones where they are not sure of the answer.

Testing strategies:

The new question types, like drag-and-drop and performance-based questions, show up at the beginning of the exams. These questions can be more complex and take longer to answer than traditional multiple-choice questions. DON’T GET BOGGED DOWN WITH THE PERFORMANCE-BASED QUESTIONS. You can skip questions and come back and answer them at the end. Here are some strategies to use when taking the exams:
Skip the performance-based questions and come back at the end to answer them so you aren’t bogged down and run out of time
Count the performance-based questions as you skip them so you know how many you have to do when you come back to them at the end

Board Transition Army Veterans to Tech Careers

The mission is to be accessible to our community and react and respond and be agile to provide those services in a timely manner. As a government organization, that is difficult to do… to be able to respond quickly and provide those services at a very personal level. But that is our goal… to reach the person and benefit them as an individual and on their needs more so than as a group or as a statistic. Or just as a number that comes through the front door. So, that is what we strive to do, is to enhance the lives and improve the lives of our community, put them first.

The mission is serving our community the way that best benefits them, not serving our community in the way that Austin, Texas tells us to do it, or the way that Washington, D.C. tells us to do it.

…Day to day, what our work is listening to what the needs are. Listening to our employers, listening to our job seekers, listening to our youth that are still in school, listening to our instructors, listening to our leaders, stakeholders, listening to what they want and expect and are demanding of the future.

What is the importance of the CompTIA A+ Certification

The CompTIA A+ Certificate is important for the following reasons:
This qualification is the most comprehensive entry-level certificate.
Organizations prefer CompTIA A+ Certificate holders because the credential focuses on the technical support of installation, networking, and troubleshooting as well as customer service and communication skills.
CompTIA A+ is one of the few certificates which are not associated with any vendor; thus, you won’t have to apply for a job at a specific organization, which, as a result, broadens your job prospects.
This credential is globally accepted.
The CompTIA A+ Certification is recommended for a number of CompTIA certificates such as CompTIA Network+.
At Ashford Global IT, skilled instructors will prepare you to excel in all of these objectives so that you can easily pass the certification exams. By effectively combining comprehensive lectures with scenario-based group and individual activities, AGIT guarantees that you will score the minimum passing scores – 675 for CompTIA A+ Essentials and 700 for CompTIA A+ Practical Application. However, if you don’t pass on your first attempt, you can take advantage of AGIT’s Success Guarantee and re-attend an open enrollment class at no cost.

CompTIA Security+ certified professionals

Your Services Will be in Demand

Organizations in both the public and private sectors seek out CompTIA Security+ certified professionals to handle network administration and security tasks. The range of services in demand often include Compliance and Operational Security, Threats and Vulnerabilities, Application, Data and Host Security, Access Control and Identity Management, and Cryptography.
3. CompTIA Security+ is the Industry Standard

The CompTIA Security+ certification is widely considered one of the essential foundational security certifications in the cybersecurity industry today. Created by Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), the Security+ certification is also accredited by ANSI demonstrating the ability to apply knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to be compliant with the ISO 17024 Standard.
4. No Prerequisites or Experience Required

One of the reasons many people decide not to obtain certifications that would significantly elevate their careers is a list of conditions required to enter the training and obtain the certification. Unlike many other cybersecurity certifications, Security+ does not have any requirements regarding mandatory prerequisites or experience. CompTIA does recommend candidates to have approximately two years of work experience in the networking and security fields to increase the likelihood of being hired faster and passing the certification.

How will the new A+ exam objectives change?

Below is a list of the topics that we expect CompTIA to either enhance or to add to the new A+ 220-1002 exam objectives:

– Software that supports cloud technologies
– Expansion of Virtualization
– Increased support for a greater variety of mobile devices (mostly settings)
– Additional performance and security monitoring tools
– Enhanced and more detailed analysis of metrics obtained from monitoring and tracking tools
– Deepening of the understanding of network access and setup
– Sideloaded applications and management of the process
– Expect security to occupy an even larger part of the A+ objectives as cybersecurity becomes an ever-growing concern

The trend over the years has been about 25% to 35% new content added and very little old content removed, maybe 5 – 10%. As additional information becomes available, we will update you on this.

Beyond new topics, we should also expect CompTIA to add more performance-based questions and by doing so, add emphasis to the practical application of knowledge. Any sub-objectives starting with “Given a scenario…” will be a clue that that type of questioning is coming up. We should expect to see more of those in the new A+ objectives. It is all based on CompTIA’s effort to, as much as possible, move from testing “knowledge” to measuring “understanding”.

Understanding the New CCNA

Under the old CCNA model, certifications were broken down across multiple courses, each with their own specific training requirements and exams. IT professionals could take training in CCNA Cloud, CCNA Industrial, CCNA Wireless and CCNA Data Center —to name a few — but the most popular were CCNA Security and CCNA Routing and Switching.

Starting February 24th, 2020, these courses will be combined into a single certification: CCNA. Earning this certification means completing a single exam, 200-301 CCNA. This exam is 120 minutes long and covers six key areas, each with different exam weights:
IP connectivity (25 percent)
Network access (20 percent)
Network fundamentals (20 percent)
IP services (10 percent)
Security fundamentals (15 percent)
Automation and programmability (10 percent)

There is no prerequisite for IT pros looking to challenge and complete the new CCNA exam, but it’s often worth making the time for a CCNA training course with a reputable online provider to help ensure you cover the right topics and address any questions before sitting down for the test. This training is best suited to IT professionals with at least one year of experience implementing and administering Cisco solutions and who have a basic knowledge of IP addressing and network connection fundamentals.
