Cybersecurity Skills when You Are a Beginner

Another way to improve your cybersecurity skills and network with colleagues is to participate in hackathons, where professionals collaborate intensively to develop a unique project in a limited time. One of the most popular resources for finding these events is Hackathon.com. Enterprise giants such as Samsung also regularly organize hackathons.
Participating in penetration testing and bounty programs

Security specialists work with their IT environment closely every day. With new attack vectors and new vulnerabilities appearing almost every day, it’s wise for companies to periodically get an outside perspective on their cybersecurity posture. External penetration testers will try to breach their defenses using a variety of techniques, from scanning ports to looking for backdoors in publicly available services. Working as a pen tester can help you expand your knowledge of how to defend against cyber threats.

Here are several of the most popular cybersecurity certifications:
Cisco CyberOps Professional

Should Participate and How to Get Started

Competitions can also serve as course content for educators looking to keep students engaged in a way that helps learning come naturally. Additionally, the NCL Game challenges help fill Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) requirements and apply to one or more of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework categories.

Team competitions encourage the important industry soft skills of collaboration, peer learning and team building, which is a significant plus for employers. Combine this experience with the feedback reports every player receives at the end of the season, and you’ve got a recipe for job hunting success.

When students compete, schools can earn prestige and recognition as they go head-to-head with rivals or well-known schools and universities. Institutions can also move up in cybersecurity rankings, like the NCL’s Cyber Power Rankings, which ranks the more than 500 academic institutions that participate annually.

CompTIA Provides Vendor-Neutral Certs

This point is a bit of a pro and a con at the same time. Entry-level pros need a baseline of skills. Specializing at that stage of your career doesn’t make the most sense. As a result, with CompTIA being vendor neutral, it becomes a very natural place for people to begin. Gaining a breadth of skills provides a solid foundation that you can build on. It also helps decouple your opportunities from a single vendor remaining popular.

Another popular CompTIA cert helps drive this point home. Looking at their entry-level cert, CompTIA’s A+ is often a requirement for entry-level helpdesk roles. Having this cert will give you the edge to be noticed by recruiters in these areas. Having foundational skills makes you attractive for entry-level positions.

Similarly, Security+ provides a way to validate your basic understanding of cybersecurity and best practices. This helps to open the door to entry-level security roles like junior IT auditor or security administrator. However, as you advance in your career, something like a Cisco security cert might hold more value. This is because specialization becomes more important as you advance your career. You won’t be an expert in everything, but you can be an expert in a given domain.

How to Install WSL with PowerShell

To get started we need to fire up a PowerShell session with elevated permissions. Type:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux

Your Server will reboot after this step, so take all the normal precautions and save your work.

2. Next, you will need to choose your flavor of Linux. The ‘best’ distribution or distro will vary from person to person, but for our example we’ll install Ubuntu.

Invoke-WebRequest -Uri https://aka.ms/wsl-ubuntu-1604 -OutFile Ubuntu.appx -UseBasicParsing

This starts the process and can take a while depending on your internet connection.

We downloaded the file to c:\windows\system32

Step 3. We need to convert the APPX file to a zip archive and extract its content.

Step 4. If you want to add the Ubuntu executable to your environment, then type in the following command: c:\windows\system32\ubuntu\ubuntu1604.exe

Step 5. Now that we have our Linux system installed, let’s look at what we can do with it. Most system administrators take advantage of the fact that Linux commands are needed.

To run it, open a cmd window with elevated admin rights. Then simply type wsl and you will be logged in.

macOS for Linux Administration

Another reason to install macOS a second time is that your personal and work installations can have different Apple IDs attached to them. This allows you to easily separate your personal Apple ID from one used solely for developing software or as part of an Apple Developer Program for your organization.

To install macOS a second time, you must first create a new APFS logical volume:
Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app).
Click the drop-down menu beside the View button in the toolbar and choose Show All Devices.
Click the + button to create a new APFS volume.
Specify a name for your APFS volume (e.g., work) and optionally set a Reserve (minimum) or Quota (maximum) size if you want to guarantee or limit the space the new logical volume can consume from the underlying partition, respectively.

Next, you can open the App Store, search for macOS Catalina and choose to download it (approximately 8GB). When the download has finished, the installation will start automatically.

At the beginning of the installation, you’ll be prompted to select the volume on which to install macOS. Simply choose the new volume you created (e.g., work) and proceed through the rest of the installation normally.

The new volume will not be encrypted, and the system will automatically boot into macOS installed on your new volume (unless you hold down the Option key at boot time and select your personal macOS installation).

CompTIA Security+ 501 vs. 601 Exam Objectives

Although the exam objectives document is longer, the new exam actually has fewer objectives. CompTIA Security+ (SY0-601) has 35 exam objectives, compared to 37 on SY0-501. The difference is that the exam objectives for SY0-601 include more examples under each objective – the number of examples increased by about 25%.

This was intentional to help you better understand the meaning of each exam objective. The more examples and details we provide, the more helpful the exam objectives are for IT pros to prepare for their certification exam and, ultimately, the job itself.

But remember, exam objectives are not exhaustive: you may encounter other examples of technologies, processes or tasks on the exam. The exam questions are not based on these bulleted examples, but on the overarching exam objectives themselves. CompTIA is constantly reviewing exam content and updating questions to ensure relevance and exam integrity.Attacks, Threats and Vulnerabilities

Includes attacks, threats and vulnerabilities from IoT and embedded devices, newer DDoS attacks and social engineering.

According to Accenture, 68% of business leaders feel their cybersecurity risks are increasing. To combat these emerging threats, IT pros must help identify cyberattacks and vulnerabilities to mitigate them before they infiltrate information systems.

Learning about social engineering attacks

Any system operated by humans is remains vulnerable to social engineering attacks. Therefore, in addition to enhancing your technical knowledge in cybersecurity, it’s important to learn how to develop procedures to block social engineering attacks, such as requiring verification before providing information to third parties. Options for enhancing your knowledge in this area include taking a course or reading materials written by social engineers, such as this book.
Exploring adjacent fields

To become truly proficient in cybersecurity topics, it’s worth looking deeper into related fields. For instance, you can dive into a particular operating system or virtual environment, learning its file structure and permissions methodologies to understand its vulnerabilities. In addition, it’s worth dedicating some time to learn the OSI model, which divides network communication into seven layers, so you can ensure that security matters that lie above or below the level where you operate are covered.

Here are some additional resources that can help you deepen your knowledge:
Cybersecurity Guide resource center
Hackernoon community
Reddit communities
Online training: Cybersecurity Practices for Industrial Control Systems
Linux Security community
“The Art of Invisibility” by Kevin Mitnick
“Hacking the Art of Exploitation” by Jon Erickson
“Future Crimes: Inside The Digital Underground and the Battle For Our Connected World” by Marc Goodman.

CompTIA At the Test

The objectives also provide insight as to the context of any of the concepts. As you review them look for subtle manipulations in the language that can have a great impact on how to define a correct answer to a question. You may be set in a scenario with a defective device or even a malfunctioning user. The ways the exam defines a scenario will provide clues to the response elements CompTIA wants to point you to. Whether the scenario calls for a situation that addresses an Installation, configuration, identification, or a compare-and-contrast situation, the context of the question formulation will, in part, determine the correct answer (more on this below).

Complete the prerequisite permissions and agreements and pay attention to the non-disclosure agreement. Take as long as you need to understand what you’re doing and what is expected of you as the exam clock will only start after you review these preliminaries. There will be a complete recording of your entire session. Take a deep breath and get started!
Time management

Succeeding at the A+ Exam requires crisp time management. When you start the test, you will see your test timer counting down. 90 questions in 90 minutes?!!? Is that even possible? OK, Stop right there. It is possible and you will probably find yourself with extra time on your hands when you are satisfied and ready to grade the test. How is this possible? Here’s how to transform the timer from a source of anxiety into a tool for success.

The key is a small checkbox labeled “Mark for later”. Marking a question does not stop the clock or provide some hidden benefit but it does, very importantly, allow you to move on to the next test question and return to it later. You will see that some questions will only take a few seconds to answer and so provide a time saving that you will benefit from later when you are more relaxed and comfortable with the process.

How to Install WSL with PowerShell

A third reason to use WSL is to iImpress your friends and colleagues with your new-found Linux knowledge. Launching a Bash session from a Windows Command Line is quite a surreal experience at first, too.

Finally, there’s the issue of security. Before Microsoft had a reliable patching cycle, it was Linux systems that were seen as the most secure option to host critical services within companies and organizations. Updating the entire operating system from the command line is a simple task, with all dependencies looked after automatically. WSL is the same. This makes it a safe option to use, provided you keep your systems updated.

1. To get started we need to fire up a PowerShell session with elevated permissions. Type:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux

Your Server will reboot after this step, so take all the normal precautions and save your work.

2. Next, you will need to choose from person to person, but for our example we’ll install Ubuntu. your flavor of Linux. The ‘best’ distribution or distro will vary from person to person, but for our example we’ll install Ubuntu.

CompTIA Security+: Securing Organizations

Over the years, security attacks have evolved. Currently, 80% of organizations use the Internet as an essential part of their business operations, and half of them experience a significant loss of assets due to Internet-related incidents.

International Data Corporation (IDC), a market research and analysis firm, reports that security spending has increased significantly in the last few years – from $5.1 billion to $14.2 billion.
There are three factors that are fueling the drive for businesses to make security an executive priority:
The business transformation to e-business
HIPAA legislation
A need to protect the business infrastructure from increasing threats
Security Challenges for Organizations

The main challenge for organizations is to allow access while still maintaining strict protection of their valuable assets. Thus, security professionals are always in demand. If this line of work interests you, a security certification is just the thing to enhance your career and make you more valuable to your employer and business.

Different Programming Platforms

The Ability to Understand Different Programming Platforms: Until now, there has been a clear division between programming and infrastructure, but they are quickly integrating and melding, and the two sides need to be able to communicate and understand each other.
The Ability to Work Effectively in a Multi-Generational Workforce:Today’s workforce includes four generations, and each one brings unique capabilities. Each also has different communication styles, work styles and work expectations. Rather than clashing and going head to head, employees from different generations should embrace their differences and find ways to learn from each other and work smarter.
The Ability to Recognize the Value of Soft Skills in Productivity: “This is what separates a good candidate from a bad candidate,” Thibodeaux said. “If you don’t have soft skills, your chances of landing a job with a good company are substantially diminished.” Today’s IT workers need strong communication and collaboration skills to work across functions and with staff at all levels, from entry-level to the C-suite, as well as both on-site and remote employees
